IDnow VideoIdent
Introduction
IDnow VideoIdent is a live, agent-led identity verification: an IDnow agent verifies the person over a short video call.
IDnow VideoIdent is BaFin-certified. For many German use cases it is the only identity verification method regulators accept, in particular when you onboard signatories of an entity contracting through a German GmbH.
How It Works
IDnow VideoIdent runs as a vendor of the Identity Verification check. When you select it, the signatory joins a live video session where an IDnow agent checks their ID and confirms their identity in real time. The outcome comes back to Dotfile asynchronously:
- Live agent verification: A real IDnow agent runs the session over video and makes the decision, not an automated system.
- Pre-filled data: The signatory's name, date of birth, and address carry over to IDnow, so they don't re-enter what Dotfile already knows.
- Evidence package: A completed verification returns a PDF summary, the captured images, and the video recording, stored on the case as documents for audit.
- BaFin-grade: The session uses the BaFin VideoIdent scenario, accepted by German regulators for high-assurance onboarding.
Configuring and Launching
In the Identity Verification checks settings you select IDnow VideoIdent as the vendor, then set automatic approval, automatic rejection, the expiration window, and the redirect URL as needed.
You can launch a check in two ways:
- From a case: Open a signatory in the case panel and trigger an Identity Verification check with IDnow VideoIdent as the vendor.
- From a template: Add the check to a template so it runs automatically for the right signatories.
Once the check is created, an IDnow VideoIdent session starts and the signatory gets a link to join the video call.
API
IDnow VideoIdent runs on the Identity Verification check via the Dotfile REST API:
- Create: create an Identity Verification check with IDnow VideoIdent as the vendor for a signatory.
- Retrieve: retrieve the check to read its current status and outcome.
Webhook events notify your systems when the verification completes. You can learn more in our API documentation.
Results and Evidence
After the session, the IDnow agent's decision drives the check result. The check moves through the following states:
| State | Description |
|---|---|
| In progress | The session has been created and is waiting for the signatory to complete the video call and for the agent's decision. |
| Approved | The IDnow agent confirmed the signatory's identity. With automatic approval enabled, the check is approved without manual action. |
| Rejected | The IDnow agent could not confirm the identity. With automatic rejection enabled, the check is rejected without manual action. |
| Expired | The signatory did not complete the session within the allotted window. |
Evidence retention
Every completed verification stores its evidence on the case for 35 days after completion, the proof you need for a BaFin regulator export.
IDnow VideoIdent: BaFin-Certified Live Video Identification
We're excited to introduce IDnow VideoIdent, a new identity verification method in Dotfile where a trained IDnow agent verifies your signatory over a short live video call. It is BaFin-certified, so you can onboard German signatories who require regulator-grade identity verification.

What's New
- Live agent verification: A real IDnow agent checks your signatory's identity over video.
- BaFin-certified: Meet German regulatory requirements for high-assurance onboarding, including signatories of entities contracting through a GmbH.
- Pre-filled data: The signatory's name, date of birth, and address carry over to IDnow, so they don't re-enter what Dotfile already knows.
- Audit-ready evidence: Every completed session stores a PDF summary, the captured images, and the video recording on the case, kept for 35 days.
Keep your automated Identity Verification vendor as the default and route to IDnow VideoIdent only for the cases that need regulator-grade verification.
